Skip screens for the last hour before bed if you can manage it.

If you can't, turn on night mode or a warm color temperature instead: Night Shift on iOS and macOS, Night Light on Windows and Android, f.lux everywhere else.

Keep the bedroom cool, around 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius). Core body temperature has to drop to fall asleep, and a warm room fights that.

Caffeine has a half-life of five to six hours, so a mid-afternoon coffee is still roughly half-active at bedtime.

Try to keep a consistent wake-up time, even on weekends. Your body's internal clock relies on that anchor far more than it relies on a consistent bedtime.

If you're lying awake for more than 20 minutes stressing about sleep, get out of bed and do something low-stimulation in dim light until you feel sleepy. Staying in bed trains your brain to associate it with frustration.

Alcohol might help you nod off faster, but it severely fragments the second half of your night, blocking restorative REM sleep and causing early-morning awakenings.

Dim the overhead lights in your home an hour before bed. Bright vertical lighting tricks your brain into thinking the sun is still up, delaying melatonin production.
