About

Joel Scharenberg

I've been taking things apart and figuring out how they work since I was a kid, jailbreaking old Apple devices and tinkering with whatever hardware I could get my hands on.

Outside of direct support work, I build tools to make the job easier: automations, dashboards, and internal utilities using APIs, Power Automate, custom connectors, and Docker. Some of what I've built is on the Built page.

I use AI heavily when I build, not just to write code but to work through problems as they come up. I run into something I don't understand, dig into it with AI, and come out the other side actually knowing how it works. When I hit the same kind of problem more than once, I turn it into a repeatable skill or workflow, like pulling an export through the command line or running a routine disk cleanup on a device, so the next time it comes up I'm not solving it from scratch. Most of my personal projects start as an idea I want to see working, and I learn what I need along the way. The tools on this site are a direct result of that: structured study guides with persistent state, grading logic, and generated practice exams, built by figuring out each piece as I needed it.

I'm a Technical Support Engineer at a managed service provider in the United States. I'm now CompTIA A+ certified. I passed Core 1 with an 815 and Core 2 with an 845, and I only used the tools on this site for Core 2. Hands-on work in a home lab I built and ran was a big part of how I prepared for A+, and it helped me land my current role. I'm studying for Network+ next.

The tools on this site have worked well for me. If you're studying for a cert, whether you're trying to break into tech or you've been at it for a while, I hope they'll help you get there too. When you're just getting started everyone wants to sell you something, and that's why these tools are free. If you want to support me, the most helpful thing you can do is use them and tell me your experience. Questions, suggestions, ideas, or any feedback about my tools are always welcome.
